While I say that the Chromebook "only does the Internet", because it does the Internet it can do quite a lot of things that you can do on a normal computer.
This will not replace a full laptop/desktop. I repeat, this will not replace a full laptop/desktop. If you don't understand that, please watch some of the videos Google has produced. However if you just need the Internet, a full keyboard (none of that touch screen nonsense) and a great browser then this is for you. As you use the Chromebook more, you find that for the most part, you don't need all those programs that run on a Windows/Mac desktop/laptop.
I have a great tower that I've built and added on as needed so dropping money on an actual laptop just to use the Internet doesn't make sense to me. Plus putting up with all the normal Windows stuff? I'll pass.
I love that my Chromebook is very fire and forget it. I open it up, do what I need, close it. Everything is updated, synced, backed up without me doing anything. And the best part? Not only is Google hard at work improving Chrome OS but when they release an update, the Chromebook handles it silently. No nagging Windows dialogue boxes telling me to restart my computer. Could you buy a netbook and run more desktop programs? Yes but it will pale in comparison to a full laptop/desktop as well.
The first main issue I have is speed. To say that I am a power tab user is quite the understatement. On my PC it is not uncommon for me to have 3 different Chrome windows open with a dozen tabs each. Performance wise the Chromebook lags a little compared to my PC but then I'm used to a 3.2Ghz quadcore and 8 GBs of RAM.
The second main issue I have is the file browser. It is clunky at best with no drag and drop ability. Definitely looking for future upgrades to this.
Two minor issues I have are: lack of some keys on the keyboard (yes there are shortcuts but pressing a single key is easier) and (so far) I haven't been able to bring up the task manager quickly when I want it. I have yet to figure an equivalent to Windows Ctrl+Alt+Del. However these minor issues can be fixed in forthcoming releases. *Note: I felt that these issues were minor enough that they did not affect my rating.
If you expect the Chromebook to be a replacement for a laptop/desktop you will be sorely disappointed. If you purchase a Chromebook so that you can quickly get online anywhere with WiFi access without having to hassle with the baggage of a regular laptop/desktop then you'll be very happy you bought it.
