Smooth installation, rewarding results

I recently purchased an RCA Model 26KA30RQD 26" LCD/DVD HDTV to replace the decades-old 18" Sylvania TV in my home office.

Funny how one thing always leads to another, and another . . .

The first was exchanging the old Comcast analog cable box for a digital HDTV model, an even swap. Everything hooked up easily and the TV was working in high definition wide-screen.

I was very disappointed with the HDTV's sound, especially its low volume even when cranked up all the way. When I began researching speaker options, I came across sound bars. As I didn't want or need a home entertainment system for my office TV, this seemed like a perfect solution. All I was looking for was decent sound, something that didn't take up a lot of space nor drain my life savings. After a couple hours of research, and after reading all the customer reviews here and many elsewhere, I decided on this Panasonic SC-HTB10 -- and hoped for the best hooking it up when it arrived.

Thanks to the many suggestions and advice here, I got a basic conception of what would be needed to make it work. I hope my review is useful to others.

The new RCA HDTV has four HDMI outputs, a number of composite audio in/out sockets, a digital audio out socket -- but no digital audio optical nor ARC connections. The new Comcast digital cable box has connections for digital audio optical and HDMI cables. Maybe in some combination this would work . . . ?

I ordered the sound bar with the AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI Cable and Toslink Digital Audio Optical Cable (2 Pack), figuring this should cover anything. I have a box of composite audio/video cables, I figured, if I need them.

The next problem: A number here noted that the sound bar would block the TV's infrared sensor. Already the cable box was sitting in front of the TV, along with the VCR player. I found the Convenience Concepts Designs-2-Go 2-Tier Swivel TV Stand, thought it'd do the trick.

When everything arrived the plan fell right into place. I had everything working perfectly in under an hour, including assembling the swivel TV stand. I connected the digital audio optical cable from the sound bar to the Comcast cable box. I connected the sound bar directly to the cable box with an HDMI cable, then ran another HDMI cable from the sound bar's output to one of the TV's HDMI inputs. First shot and everything worked perfectly -- I think a first experience for me!

I'm satisfied now with the sound, with the entire setup. This sound bar makes the small system perfect.

One disappointment with the sound bar -- though mentioned in some of the other customer reviews, so not unexpected -- is the lack of volume display bar (or anything else) on the TV screen. Users are blind to what is happening with volume or sound settings between the remote and the system. For this reason only, I've given the product four stars instead of five.
