No electric razor is perfect, but this one's pretty good

I bought this shaver with the hopes that it would prevent ingrown hairs that I usually get when I shave. After fully charging it, I gave it a try and was relatively satisfied with the results. Now granted this was my first experience with an electric shaver (I use the old school straight razor), but I thought it took a long time to get a clean shave. After about 15 to 20 minutes of working on my face (which had just a few days of growth), I was almost clean shaven. Almost because there were small patches of hair that refused to be cut down. So it may have been my overly high expectations or the limitations of the product, but I didn't think it provided me with an adequate "clean shave."

I've tried many electric razors. Last was Norelco with the 3 rotating heads (about a 5-year old product). The razor was very good; what I liked best was the minutes-to-go could be easily seen so you knew how much "life" was left before re-charging. When re-charging, if you left the razor unconnected after it was re-charged, it reduced the battery's
life. Battery's are costly to replace.

This Panasonic razor (#ES8301s) cuts closer and has a head which adjusts to the curvature and contours of your face. It is a "softer" feel on the face.

It is everything I would like in a razor. The negatives is the countdown on the battery's life is in 10% segments, i.e., 100%, 90%, 80%,and so on until it seems to automatically shut down. That's not good. Better to have each percent shown or each minute shown that is left because it gives the user greater control over when to re-charge in my judgment. Unlike the Norelco, if you lose power in your battery, you can't plug in this model Panasonic electric razor. The plug in is only for re-charging. With the Norelco even if the battery is not sufficient to run the razor, you can plug it in with the re-charging cord and it will totally function. You must shut down the razor for it to re-store the battery's life. This model of Panasonic does not work off the electric cord, only the battery, which is why I gave it 4 stars. Another big plus for the Panasonic is when fully-recharged, the charging stops so the battery isn't harmed versus the Norelco. That's a big plus for Panasonic.

Lastly, I've had the Panasonic for less than six months when it suddently began shutting down involuntarily at 50% battery life left. I feel I was sold a product in which the battery was not good, for whatever reason. The instructions accompanying the Panasonic razor said there was a two-year warranty. I called them and they told me to ship it back to them. I am about to do that having gone back to Amazon to get the invoice to show my proof of purchase and had the razor for less than 6 months.

Since I would be without a razor while the battery was being replaced, I bought a current Norelco product (# 8240XL) and it seems to be as good as the Panasonic or even better flowing over my face and getting a close cut. The extreme negative is it doesn't count down the time left before re-charging; it shows only a "low battery". That's not good at all. Knowing the time left before needing to re-charge in minutes or percent of battery life remaining is important to me.
