Perfect companion so you don't waste diagnostic fees

I've used this code reader a few times now, and it's worked great each time.

I bought it because my "Check Engine" light came on shortly after I failed to tighten the gas cap properly. I figured the warning light was simply caused by this (minor) problem, but I didn't want to take any chances. The code reader allowed me to double-check the cause, and clear the warning light myself. Simply taking the car to the dealer to clear the light would have cost more money and time than I spent on this inexpensive device.

Since then, I've lent the reader to a few friends: Lots of people seem to find a use for this.

Overall, it's nice and compact. Very handy to have. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that the two-button interface is a little bit non-intuitive. I had to keep the manual with me as I used it the first time. Not that this is a big deal-- but it would be nice if the interface were a bit more user-friendly. I have read down thru the reviews and I would like to point out some issues I have with some low scores..

First, why would someone give a low score to something they purchased knowing it had the least features of any other units. The ratings are about the unit in question.

Second, if you read the code, then start throwing parts at your car having no mechanical knowledge, don't come here and start complaining that this unit didn't do your dishes for you too.

This is an inexpensive tool that will allow you to get the information from you car, and can also clear a CEL, 'Check Engine Light' that was set off because of a DTC, 'Diagnostic Trouble Code.' I gave it 5 stars because it does exactly what it says it does, does it well, and is well built. No E-bay garbage here. It will not, however, give you a mechanics point of view. That is training that you will need to buy from elsewhere ;-) The Actron CP9125 is a low end Code Reader for OBDII vehicles, but it does a fine job at reading the codes and I certainly recommend its use. However, once you have the error code in hand, the little booklet that translates the code(s) you have just found could do a lot better. For example, I discovered that my vehicle, a 2001 Hyundai Accent, displayed code P0133. The little booklet that comes with the CP9125 told me that P0133 indicated "O2 Sensor CKT Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1)". It should have been more explicit, writing out in plain English the meaning of "CKT" which I am guessing means 'circuit', and that Sensor 1 is the 1st Oxygen (O2) sensor in the exhaust system leading away from the engine. But, the bigger problem is that the documentation should go into much more detail. In my case I thought my problem would be solved by replacing the O2 sensor. So I replaced it, destroying the original in the process. (O2 sensors can be very difficult to remove and most small garages simply break off the top so they can use a socket and breaker bar over the base.) As it turns out, the P0133 code can be triggered by a leak in the exhaust system between the 1st and 2nd O2 sensor - in my case at the exhaust flexible coupling, an easily fixed problem. In fact, this is a very frequent problem when you have a P0133 code. Unfortunately, O2 sensors start around $70 and can go well over $100, and this does not count the labor to remove and replace. Money I lost simply because a quick list of things that could trigger a P0133 code was not included in the documentation. I am sure this is true for all the other codes. I know this would make the little booklet of documentation much larger, but without this information the Actron CP9125 can end up costing you much more than its initial cost.
