2012 Creative Construction Tool kit all in one Box

I've been woodworking as a hobby for over 30 years - a screw and glue kind of guy.

I saw the late night commercials for quite a while before I decided to try this out. It's AWESOME how solid the joint is when done. I found that there's still a need for the traditional joinery I prefer doing but there is definitely a new mix to the method I'm using to put 2 pieces of wood together.

Out of the box some of the pieces appear confusing. I should have reviewed the printed material and the DVD intro but I'm a MAN. HA HA HA. Once you get the sense of how everything works it's easy to get better at it each time you use this jig. And even though it identifies the jig settings for your wood thicknesses, it is also customizable to your preferred taste, and it is still successful.

I would also suggest buying the screw assortment that comes in its own case. You'll want to put something together and you won't have enough screws with what's provided with the jig.

Clamps are also mandatory. If you don't already have what Kreg offers you might as well get it now. The wood pieces can take on their own life if they are not held tightly together while being joined.

My first project was the new workbench that was put together mostly with pocket holes. I'm now on to a shadow box coffee table. I'm having so much fun that the weekends just fly by! I think I've figured every possible way of screwing up the jig. The drill bit is not very strong, and shattered when I accidentally bit into a hidden screw. The drill depth collar can move easily if you use an impact drill (and then you drill too deep and into the jig plastic itself!). I feel the Kreg screw head is a little too big for the hole, so the screw head gets wedged instead of seating tightly at the bottom of the hole. Getting the right torque on the screw is tricky because of this. I've over-tightened and popped the screw out the otherside, and now I am very conservative and it takes a lot of finesse to seat the screw just right. If you don't clamp the work super tight, you will make a mess of the joint. The plastic housing is not very strong, and you can easily bend the plastic in the bench jig.

That said, it is a nice little invention and I'm happy with it, but I would have been happier with one made of aluminum.

Update a year later - to respond to those that thought I was using the wrong tooll (impact
driver), yes you are right, that was part of the reason I posted my review. Don't use an impact driver (ie the Makita LXDT01).

However, I was still disappointed with the plastic aspect of the tool that makes it flex if you clamp it
too hard, and that the fact that the. drill bit shattered way too easily when it bit into one of the screws. So stillll 4 of 5 stars.
