A different kind of protein powder

I was buying the ready-made boxed ones at the gym and decided to get the "big" container. I never liked any of the powder drink/shakes, but this one is fantastic. It has a great taste and makes water nice and thick (make sure you use very cold water). I've been using Muscle Milk for about 4 months now. It does help you lose weight, The muscle building part ... I work out five times a week and do have results, whether I would say its the Muscle milk or not ... I'd have to say it doesn't hurt. Muscle Milk does a good job on recovery as well, I have noticed that muscle soreness is minimal even after very hard workouts. Give it a try its good! I don't currently use Muscle Milk, but I've gone through probably 15lbs of it in the past. I'm very familiar with and respect it's formula. I've used the chocolate, strawberry, cake batter, and brownie batter flavors. The Cake and Brownie batter are my two favorite. They taste like a dessert milkshake, but without all of the sugar. If you are just starting off with MM and don't know which flavors to try first, try one of those. The formulations mix well in a shaker bottle and taste best with milk (with water, it's just "ok").

One thing that has made MM special over time is that they were a casein based protein back when whey protein was the hottest thing going. What the whey sellers didn't tell you though is that whey protein is VERY thin by itself and is not optimal for building muscle over an extended period of time. Drink a whey protein shake on an empty stomach and you're hungry again in two hours.

The thick casein protein in MM is much heavier and sits on your stomach for much longer than whey. This causes slower digestion and a more gradual release of amino acids over time. Because of this, MM is a much more appropriate general purpose protein than pure whey is. So there is that angle.

The other thing that makes MM special is the inclusion of a fair helping of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). MCTs are fats which are not usually stored as fat within the body. Instead, the body rapidly converts them into usable energy - which is great to refuel depleted muscles from hard exercise. There is also a "light" version of MM with a much reduced dose of these MCTs. I understand people's desire to reduce calories, but these are GOOD fats which give you energy, not bad fats which accumulate around your waistline. In my opinion, the inclusion of these MCTs makes muscle milk special and puts it above other garden variety protein formulations. Muscle Milk Light just isn't the same and I would never recommend it because there are cheaper proteins which work the same.

So, MM tastes great, has quality casein proteins, has MCTs and all of that stuff is GOOD. Where does it falter? Well, I would caution that while in general these flavors taste very good, they are a bit sweet. The sweetness obviously does not come from sugar, but from artificial flavors and sweeteners. If you are on a diet and trying to shed bodyfat, artificial sweeteners are not your friend.

So as a general purpose protein for those of you maintaining or looking to increase bodyweight, MM is a great choice. For those on a strict diet, I would recommend something not as artificially sweet.
