Kiss Your Land Line Goodbye!

Why did I wait so long to get this? If you are paying over $20+ a month for local and long distance calling within the USA through a land line AND you are also paying for an internet connection, don't waste any more of your money paying for the phone land line. You just need internet service then buy this device, connect it to your internet, and you'll have phone service and free calling within the USA. I paid $40 to port my AT&T landline number to Ooma (porting is free is you subscribe to Ooma's Premium service), it took a total of 8 days to port my number, so now I receive and make calls with my old number as well. Porting your number will automatically close your old land line account, at least it did for me. So to make sure you can port your number, don't contact your land line provider to cancel your account yourself, just file to port your number with Ooma, and they will take care of porting it.

You can connect a phone directly to the Ooma Telo, however you also have the choice of using Ooma with the existing phone jacks in your house so they will work like they did when you had land line service. I heard about this feature but didn't believe it would actually work until I did it! What you have to do is first disconnect the line coming into your phone box from the outside world so there's no signal from your old provider going through your lines at all (NOTE: even after canceling your land line service, you will still get a dial tone signal as by law phone companies have to provide 911 access even on inactive accounts, although Ooma already provides 911 you may want to keep one line connected to your old land line just in case). You can verify the line is disconnected as if you pickup any existing phones linked to that box in your home, they will be dead. Then using a phone wire, plug one end into an existing phone jack in your house and the other end into the PHONE jack of the Telo (do NOT use the WALL jack on the Telo as that jack is for a second phone line). Now all the rest of your phone jacks should be live as you'll hear the Ooma dial tone on them.

All this sounds too good to be true right? Well there is one small catch, it's not free but that's due to our friends in the government not Ooma. They've forced companies like Ooma to start charging taxes, money which goes to the government not Ooma. You'll probably pay around $3-$4 each month in taxes and fees which is still much less than you'd be paying for a local and long distance calling plan from your phone company. To figure out your exact taxes and faxes, Ooma provides a calculator here:[...] This phone system is everything that was promised and more. I really wish that they would put more information on their own website because it took me several weeks of reading reviews to make my decision and to answer all of my questions about the product and the actual costs involved. The system was absolutely "plug and play". I hooked it up behind my router (which is not recommended), but have had no issues at all. The phone is much clearer than my previous IP phone provider(Teleblend)and the cost of the router will pay for itself in less than a year. If you are someone that has everything they need in their own personal mobile phones and just wants to keep a home phone number to make those things in our house ring...then get this.
You have an option to pay around $19.00 a month for the premium service which gives you all of the options the the phone companies charge you $60 or so for and you can start this at anytime. (You get the first few months free, BUT you must contact them to cancel the premium to avoid the $19.00 a month charge.) Even if you forget it is still only $19.00 for the service that you would pay 3 times that for with the phone comapny. Also, I ported the number that I had and it only took about 3 weeks. This is not their fault because there is a process that has to be done through the phone companies to port you number from one provider to another. They made this absolutely painless and I was constantly updated with emails on the progress until it was complete. Great product...great price.
