With a one-time purchase you get a little black box that hooks into your existing broadband internet service (cable internet is better than DSL for various reasons). This box is placed between your phones and the internet; you talk on the same phone that you have sitting there right now (although you can buy special phones or dect 6.0 or anything else) but instead of your voice going over telephone wires it goes over the internet; if you are not familiar with this method you should know that it's been around for a long time and you can still call 911 over this system. Supposedly you can fax and send out your home security system but I haven't configured for that. There are several other specialized configurations I won't discuss.

If you want to keep your old phone number you can "port" it for a $40 fee and it takes about 3 weeks. You keep your current service until it ports (they'll tell you the exact date) and then cancel your service (in my case they put the cancel order in for me).

They give you a trial of premium service to entice you...it's not a bad deal, but if you really don't want to pay for service then you cancel it during the trial period and be happy that you have free local and long-distance service (and inexpensive international, as well).

They offer a basic service (just the aforementioned $12 per year tax) and a premium service ($10/mo for an extra line at home, the ability to block solicitations or individual phone numbers, forwarding, etc.). They were dumping voice-mail for a while but I think digital voice-mail is back in the basic package (you can check your voice-mail from any internet connected computer).

If you have a complex home network (security wi-fi settings, etc.) then you might have to do some extra work to make it operate correctly. Otherwise it's plug-and-play.

Downside of this deal is that you will not have landline phones in a power outage.

I would guess for most people that they will get their money back on this deal in less than a year. At that point, it's saving you money every month...the only negative outcome I can figure out is if the company went out of business then you might be left with a pretty little box and no service...if you think they'll be around long enough to get your money back and save a little extra for the hassle to switch, it's a good deal...and since they've been around a few years now and are only growing more popular it's probably a low risk.
