Good Value in an Electric Razor 2012

It's been over 10 years since I regularly used an electric razor. I've owned at least 6 electrics of various brands and types (rotary, foil, etc.) over the years, and have always returned to using a blade after 6 months or so. I would always get tired of the skin irritation, the poor, uneven closeness of the shave, and the length of time a reasonably close shave would take. But I figured it's been 10 years since I last tried one, and wet razors have made tremendous advances in closeness and comfort, maybe electrics have gotten better, too.

I didn't want to spend a fortune on an electric razor, but I also didn't want the bottom end of the product line, so I went with the Norelco PT730 as it seems to offer some higher-end feature like a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery, the "Super Lift & Cut" blade system (which promises to offer a closer shave with less irritation), a built-in trimmer, and a fully washable design (which I was very interested in).

Not all that much has changed with electrics in the past 10 years. Same basic shape and "floating" rotary blade layout as my last Norelco (no idea of the model number). They added some nice looking trim stripes, grippy surfaces, and ergonomic curves to the body, so it's easier to hold onto. And it's A LOT lighter than I remember my old one being. Probably a combination of the Lithium Ion battery and a lot more plastic parts - but that's what you get today no matter what you buy. The "controls" (on/off, and trimmer) are easy to reach and activate, and have a quality feel like they will last for awhile.

I followed the directions and charged up the unit until the charging light lit up continuously (took roughly overnight). The next morning when I went to use it for the first time, I was struck just how quiet the shaver is in operation. I could probably use this in the master bathroom with the door closed and not wake my sleeping girlfriend. I was also worried that it was so quiet that it lacked the necessary power to do the job. Fortunately, I was worried for nothing because it powered through my 2 day beard growth without slowing noticeably. I didn't have very high expectations for a close shave that first day because I needed to get used to using an electric razor again. Like every manufacturer warns in their owners manual, Philips Norelco has the standard disclaimer: "Your skin may need 2 or 3 weeks to get accustomed to the Philips shaving system". I did however, find the shaver easy to hold and manipulate around the curves of my face. I got a decent shave, though no where near as close as a razor shave. It's always a good idea to freshly wash your face just prior to shaving. This removes the facial oils that clog up a razor, and lifts the whiskers off your face for a closer shave. It's VERY IMPORTANT to thoroughly dry your face first before using the razor as the moisture on your skin will cause the heads to drag making shaving most frustrating. They offer alcohol based pre-shave products that clean and dry your face faster than air alone. These can dry out the skin though.
