Philips Norelco PT730 Best Deals

I recently purchased the PT730. I have owned a Norelco 5842 XL for 26 years. It has dropped down to about 1 week of use per charge from the 6 weeks it was for many years. I am only on my second set of shaving heads. I just got tired of charging it weekly. The old razor outperforms the PT730 in every way. The only advantage the new one has is that it is lighter and quieter and that is mostly due to it having a marginal motor. It has no more than half the power of the old razor. I was also surprised to find that it doesn't shave as closely as my 15 year old cutting heads. Maybe things have to wear in a bit for optimum closeness.

Fortunately for me, the PT730 does an adequate job because I don't have very heavy whiskers. For those who have light to medium whiskers, this shaver will be fine. If you have manly-man stubble I would suggest looking for something with more power. If you require a very close shave, look elsewhere as well. I have two current electric razors, both Panasonics. The ES8017 is a lower end entry unit (3 years) and the ES8249 (1.5 years) which is a higher end razor (with charging/cleaning/drying station). I have a normal beard and generally perfer an actual blade razor, but appreciate the speed and abiltity to shave without lotion an electric offers. The Panasonics do a good job on my cheeks and jaw line but struggle a bit on the neck hair, which tends to grow in different directions. I was interested to see if this Norelco would far better.

Out of the box, I noticed how light the Noreclo was. Despite the lack of heft, the build seemed good with the plastic having no stress marks or burring. It also fit together well with no noticeble defects. I charged it over night and the next morning gave it a go.

It is quiet in comparison to the panasonics, very quiet. I was a bit worried intially that it was getting not getting full power having been used to the power tool like sound and vibration from the pany's. However once on my face it cut cleanly and quickly. It did a great job on my face and jawline. It also outperformed the panasonics on the lower neck, actually being able to cut all the hair and not leaving a scattered few. Have used it for most of the week now with no complaints and haven't needed to recharge it. The cut is very close, I would say not quite a blade but a bit closer then the panasonics. It also does better with very short stubble then the panasonics. If I blade shave the day prior, they often have trouble picking up the stubble the next day, no such issue with the norelco. It does also have the usual flip up sideburn cutter on the back of the unit.

Other then the razor and charging plug it comes only with a cleaning brush and snap on blade cover. I would have liked to have seen it ship with a soft case of some sort for travel. I will update in a few months to see if the unit continues to perform as the blades wear. If I have any concern it is as they dull it may lose performance but don't want to prejudge. New and out of the box though it does an excellent job. I liked both my Panasonics and will still use them (one for travel and one at work) but the Noreclo suprisingly is going to replace the ES8249 at home.
