I've been looking for a drill/driver for quite some time.

I've been looking for a drill/driver for quite some time. I've tested out the Bosch 18 volt and Dewalt 18 volt NiCad. I actually ended up returning my Bosch after a few days and wound up getting this combo. I've learned that I'm willing to pay a little bit more for an ergonomic drill thats more suited to my everyday needs.. Im not a professional and have learned that if I need more power than this 12 volt can deliver I really just need a corded drill. I'm not exactly using it for three inch holesawing on a daily basis. Both the drill and impact driver fit like a glove, are light and offer more than enough power for around the house needs as well as for my woodworking purposes. When I first got the drill I tested it out by predrilling, seating and unseating 60 three inch screws in a 2x6. The drill had juice to spare. The impact driver was able to seat 50 three inch screws without predrilling. Just be sure to wear ear protection with the impact since they'll ring afterwards. Dewalt really got it right in this and you cant beat the deal Lowes has going with a free battery pack.

I've only had the drill for a week or so but it's great so far. My only issue with it is that the torque setting gets looser as you go lower. It shifts around. It doesn't seem to affect performance but it does speak somewhat to build quality. I've heard others complain about looseness in the battery pack but that seems to be the case with other makers too such as Bosch 18v Lithium. I will update in the coming months if there are any other issues.i bought the 12v. but did test out the 20v and was completely impressed. obviously, the 20 v is way more powerful, but i wasn't looking for power as much as i was looking for a a smaller size (although, the 20V compact is surprisingly small). it just depends on what you plan on using them for. ideally, I would have both sets. 12 v for around the house, furniture, fixing doors, cabinets, assembling things, and stuff like that...and then have the 20V there to tackle the heavy duty applications like decks, fences, lumber, concrete....etc. i didn't know how i would like the drill / impact driver method of using two tools to accomplish what i had always used one to do (switching from a drill bit for pilot holes and then back to a screw bit to drive the fastener). but i'm so impressed with it and pleased with the accuracy that i will never go back. since you have two drills already set up for different functions, you don't get lazy and rush through the work convincing yourself that you don't need a pilot hole. instead, you drill a pilot hole every time because its so easy and readily available, and then you pop a screw in, and drive it in with ease using the impact driver, which by the way, has yet to strip one screw, and it counter sinks when you need it to. and if you don't want to counter sink, the trigger is pressure sensitive, so depending on how soft you pull the trigger, it can actually be quite a delicate tool too, comparable to using a hand screwdriver. the lithium ion batteries have been very good so far. they seem to last pretty much all day, I built a piece of furniture which required a lot of pocket holes, the 12v set died on me about 6 hrs into it. not bad considering the application. the belt clips are heavy duty which are awesome. I am partial to Dewalt having used the classic 18V XRP for years. i was concerned about not having the metal chuck, but as long as it is ratcheting I'm ok with it. and to give a little comparison, i did initially buy the porter cable (good brand as well....for saws/sanders/routers) trying to save a little money and change my drill line up a bit, as soon as it arrived i tested it out and was disappointed and had buyers remorse. grips are not ergonomic, the belt clips are tight, and small, and the biggest deciding factor for me was the chuck. it came loose after every use. it does not ratchet (a must). it was powerful though, but not any more than the dewalt. the dewalts are just perfect in my opinion.
