My 10 year old son loved the electrical unit in science

Last year I bought the smallest Snap Circuits kit for my grandson who was 12 at the time. He loved it and played with it for days, making many projects independently and showing them off to us. He said he wanted a bigger kit, so this year I ordered the biggest. Amazon came through again with a speedy delivery in time for the holiday celebrations. This larger kit comes with several manuals and there is an infinite number of projects. I was particularly interested in what he could make with the little solar panel that is part of the kit, but that did not attract his attention. My grandson is now 13 and easily distracted. He made 3 or 4 of the projects from the things he was familiar with from the smaller set, and a few new ones, then seemed overwhelmed and did not want to study the manuals. There was a lot going on that day and I think he will settle in and explore the rest of the kit on his next visit. These kits are fantastic and easy to assemble, but there are a lot of parts. Some of the projects are easy and can be figured out without much effort, while other projects are complicated and may take some supervision or suggestions from an adult. My grandson is probably at the upper age limit of their appeal.
Bought this for my 6 year old son. I have been very impressed by the durability and simple instructions for constructing the circuits and projects. As a previous Naval electrical systems trainer I find the explanations and description of electrical theory a little poor. For instance you may do two projects in a row where the only difference is how a diode is installed. The stated objective is to show that it works one way and not the other. It does not explain what a diode is, how to tell if it is installed correctly, how one works etc..... It does have a basic description of the parts at the front of the project book but nothing within the project itself. Also they missed a great opportunity in the first few projects to explain series and parallel circuits. Luckily I have the background to fill in all these gaps but to someone who does not this may be a sore spot. Overall I am really pleased with the kit and my son loves it and he has no problems building the circuits on his own. If the text was a bit more comprehensive it would be a truly amazing kit. I had one of those kits with a thousand springs and wires when I was a child and this is far more durable and user friendly. I would recommend this to anyone interested in learning basic electricity/electronics even if you had to do some Googling to get some more detail on the why's and theory.
My 10 year old son loved the electrical unit in science so I thought of him when I saw this. It was THE HIT of the Christmas presents. He has built and rebuilt. It does suck batteries so I recommend the AC adapter solder separately. Worth it. The product is very durable for snapping and unsnapping. My biggest gripe is the horribly cheap box it comes in. It is so flimsy and doesn't hold the pieces in their compartments well. We've gotten around it by leaving it open and using the cover to double as a second box to give it some strength. Looking into the optional carry case if it continues to be a favorite. I highly recommend!
