I will most definitely not be buying another Lasko anything!

I bought one of these heaters (a different serial number) in August and was really pleased. So when I realized I needed a bit more heat in the room, I ordered another. The second one, same number as the first, off-gassed a burning plastic smell, so bad that even in the open air, it seemed to poison everything for a half-block. I thought that the second one was just a lemon, so I returned it and ordered this one, thinking that the bad one was a fluke. Not!

This heater off-gassed an odor exactly like the other, even though it had a slightly different number and interface. Luckily, I turned it on outside first, so it didn't poison the indoors. I let it run 8 hours, but it never stopped making the dreadful smell -- and making me cough and choke up.

One bad heater I can understand. But I'm a fast enough learner to say after two tries that that's enough. I'm sorry because the very first one I got is quiet and efficient and easy to use. But these next two turned me away from any Lasko ceramic heater.See the vent grille in the pictures? The element only takes up a piece of that space (the rest is closed off), so the heat only comes out of 1/3 of the available area. The grille is one solid piece (non-adjustable), so if you just came in from the cold, you have to prop the whole unit up if you want to warm more than just your legs.

Another thing I found strange is that when you turn the heater on, it starts at the "low" setting on "max," and you have to press Power again to set it to "high" where you select a temperature. I don't really see the need for individual temperature settings when Low-Medium-High would suffice, along with a gauge so you can see what the actual temperature is.

I admit that after a minute or so, it starts to heat up an area/room nicely, and it's light and doesn't take up much foot space. Having a remote is nice for lazy people like me who start to doze off and don't feel like getting up to turn it off. But for the cost, I expected something a little better. We have an old all-metal Arvin heater (from the late 80s I think!) which blows heat immediately when you turn the dial, and heats up a room much faster than this one.

EDIT: We bought another one, which kept tripping the circuits in our house. I will never buy another heater from this company again. Thank goodness Amazon has a hassle-free return policy!I'm really frustrated with this product. After ordering it (the first time) it came to me damaged and unusable. The entire front face of the heater was broken with the wires visible and sticking out. It looked like it had been damaged before it was even shipped as the outermost box was in pristine condition. Amazon quickly and easily returned the damaged item. I thought it was a fluke so I decided to order a second one -- thinking I would have better luck.

The second heater came undamaged and in much better condition. I started using it and I was mostly satisfied with it for the first few days. The only problem I had with it was that the remote did not work. But after using it for less than a week, it just turned itself off. I thought maybe it had overheated so I let it sit overnight to cool off. The next morning I turned it back on and it started up just fine. However, after about a minute of it being on, it made a loud screech noise, lit up, and blew the fuse it was plugged into. Not only did it scare me, but it also started to smoke and left a terrible smell in my apartment. I'm incredibly disappointed with this product. I will be returning this piece of junk today and I will most definitely not be buying another Lasko anything!
