The Syma S107/S107G Fantastic helicopter

Relying on the feedback on this site, I ordered three of these little helis for Christmas gifts, one to me for test purposes. My previous experience with a small RC helicopter purchased several years back was not good. It was squirrelly, and about all it would do well is crash. I was understandably wary, therefore.

The order arrived promptly, and I set my helicopter up for its first flight. From the get-go, this was a resounding success! It is extremely stable in flight right out of the box, and with a bit of tweaking of the yaw control, it does near-perfect lift-offs and landings. A bit of flight time is needed before turns are mastered. The first thing to get under control is the throttle. Slow and steady is the way to lift off; otherwise, it will fly into the ceiling! Once you have lift-off under control, add some turns. A bit of power is a good thing to add in a turn, as any pilot will tell you. It is a real blast to fly. I would say the only drawback is short battery life and a long recharge (40 minutes or so) between flights. It's possible to order a longer-life battery as a DIY retro refit for you die-hard flight fans, however.

Based on my experience, I ordered 5 more for gifts--it was the 'present of the year' for my grandkids and sons-in law! Highly recommend it. The Syma S107 has been widely praised in reviews around the Web. Mine arrived today and I've been amazed with it.

For background, I bought three SkyHogs Havoc helicopters when they first came out. My children and I have enjoyed them for years now. Like all the early two channel models, you are limited to up/down and turn left/right control, the latter being especially twitchy and hard to control.

The S107, for the same price as the Havoc still retails, is altogether another experience. The coaxial design is rock-solid stable. The electronic gyro locks in headings phenominally well. And the third channel - forward/reverse - is a delight. In short, when the Havoc is a trick to keep from hitting walls as it wanders at its own will, the Syma goes where you want with laser-like accuracy.

No, this is not an aerobatic design nor would it handle any wind at all - it's strictly for indoor use. But it really does well there.

Next step up? I'm considering the Double Horse 9100 and the Blade mSB. Meanwhile this Syma will be loads of fun for years to come.

By the way, XHeli shipped the day after I ordered from Amazon. It arrived three days after that in flawless condition. For about US$30, how can you beat that?
