The LeapFrog LeapPad Great Learning Product

Instead of telling you how wonderful this device is I will first start by telling you what you need to be aware if you are unsure about buying this toy.

Areas of Concern:
1. Uses 4 AA batteries and it is power hungry.
2. It will not play any of the older Leapster games.
3. Apps go between $5 for interactive flash-cards, 7.50 for E-books, games and videos and 10.00 for the newer titles.
4. You can get similar E-books and games from I-tunes store ie. Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat 3.99 or Harold and the Purple Crayon 6.99 and Sesame Street e-books 1.99 and all other junk for free.

Sweet Spots:
1. Backward compatible with Leapster Explorer including apps; so you can install most titles in both devices and play Explorer games cartridges.
2. Device comes already pre-loaded with camera and video recorder which in the case of the LeapFrog Leapster Explorer Learning Game System (Green) is a 20 dollar add-on and 4 titles (3 are on the device Pet Pad, Art Studio, Story Studio and 1 of your choice downloadable); so you don't really have to spend extra to get use of the device right away out of the box.
3. Gyroscope enable apps as in the game Roly Poly Picnic.
4. Huge 5 inch display with a resolution of 640 x 480; the screen area swallows my Ipod touch, my blackberry Storm and dwarfs both screens of Nintendo 3DS.
5. Expected Leapfrog name quality.

In a nutshell, while some parents may find the $100 price tag a little high, you need to consider the educational value that this device offers and not view only as a toy; in comparison we also got our 6 year old the Nintendo DS Lite just for gaming purposes but it does not offer the whole array of educational titles that Leapfrog has. Nintendo has some good ones but not as versatile as Leapfrog. You need to get a good 8 set of rechargeable batteries to keep the expenses down.
