To lose weight and keep it off for the long-term you need to get your subconscious mind working with you instead of against you. The principle here is that the subconscious mind does not respond to coercion or force and if your attitude is "all or nothing" then do yourself a favour and stop reading this article.
If the above statement shocks you, that's good because I wanted you to sit up and take notice. When working with the unconscious mind we need a soft approach. This is the main reason crash diets do not work in the long run. The mind needs time to adjust to a new pattern of behaviour. As a rule of thumb, 42 days would be the absolute minimum for a new habit to take root and start to become automatic.
Imagine that your behaviours and beliefs are like the palms of your hands touching each other with your fingers intertwined as tightly as possibly. This will give you a fair idea of how inextricably linked they are to one another. What you believe about yourself affects your behaviour, which in turn affects the beliefs you have about yourself. Why this is relevant will become clearer as you read on.
For example, you may wish to stop eating chocolate and remove it completely from your food intake. The next thing to happen is that you will begin to crave it. This is completely normal as you have changed a pattern in your subconscious mind. When you change a pattern suddenly you effectively have thrown the mind into a temporary state of chaos. The mind reacts by trying to restore order and put things back the way they were. How does it do this? It makes you crave the very thing that you are trying to eliminate until you give in and order is restored.
Gradually reducing your chocolate intake over a longer period of time will eliminate this response. This will prevent alarm bells from ringing in the unconscious mind, giving it time to adapt to the new pattern of eating. When the new behaviour becomes automatic your belief about yourself will also change. So how does all this relate to your beliefs and behaviours, well it's really quite simple.
If you want to lose weight and keep it off then you need to "believe" that you actually can do it, and then start performing behaviours that back up this belief. Whatever behaviour you perform in life has its roots in your belief system, the saying believe and achieve is a very profound statement and also one that you might want to adopt in your efforts at weight loss.
If your belief is that you cannot do something, then guess what you wont.and your behaviour will match that belief exactly.
If you believe you can do something and then start performing behaviours to correspond with that belief you can accomplish just about anything ask any Olympian.
