The Art of Neuro Relationship Conditioning
In 1885 Herman Ebbinghaus studied the levels at which student forget the information they have learned. His work is as relative today as it was over 100 years ago and has been proven many times over. His studies showed that while young children learn at a great rate as we grow into adulthood our retention levels reduce significantly. Typically we forget around 80% of a training course, book or audio program after just 3 days and 90% is gone within 6 days! That means within 6 days of a training course you only have on average 10% of the knowledge you have gained from that course!!! How scary is that!
This is not only true of learning and training but also of motivation or changes you make in your life; (such as weight loss for instance!) in fact it's true for most of the areas of your life. I'm sure you can remember a certain time where you had the motivation to do a specific task or take a specific action, you maybe even got started. But then after a while your motivation dropped off further and further until maybe the task didn't get completed - does that sound familiar? Is that something that may have happened to you in the past? I know it has to me!
The truth is that we need 'topping up' on a regular basis; whether that be our knowledge needs topping up, our motivation or our desire to change and keep that change. A few years ago I coached someone wanting to lose weight and sure enough at the start of our process her weight started to drop. After 7 coaching sessions she decided that she now knew enough and could do it on her own!
About 6 months later I received a rather irate phone call from her saying that what I had done had not worked! I was taken aback to say the least.
After talking to her for a while it emerged that all was good for about 4 months but then her motivation began to drop off and she started eating more of the foods that would make her overweight again yet she still claimed it was 'my fault'.
I decided to offer her a free coaching session and go through her actions to see where it went wrong and see if she could get back on the right path. During that session she admitted that actually it was her that had changed her own actions.
Have you ever done anything like that? Started something that you knew worked but then didn't carry it on? I have and regretted it after the fact. So why do we do that? We do it because we might know it intellectually but we don't condition it into our nervous system, into our Neuro system.
We need to keep working on what we want to keep it fresh in our minds and condition it into our nervous systems. To hear it once or twice is not enough, to see a picture once or twice does not guarantee you'll remember every detail. Let me put it another way; I love to play guitar; it is one of my great passions in life. When I first started to play I couldn't understand why I had to keep re-tuning the strings so I asked my guitar teacher. He said that the strings needed conditioning regularly to keep them in tune because they are stretched into a certain position to produce the right tone but as they are stretched and used they stretch more therefore dropping out of tune.
How true of that is our lives? We all have so much going on that we can be stretched into the right place but then other things happen and we get stretched a bit more and we are all of a sudden 'out of tune' with what we were focussing on! Coaching is there to re-tune us towards our goals, targets and motivations.
Coaching focuses our minds on the conditioning in our nervous system, our Neuro system, putting us back on the right track or back into tune. We set up relationships in our minds as to what is important to us and the stronger we can set up those relationships, the stronger we can 'condition' those relationships to be the more likely we are to follow through and achieve our targets and goals.
Since working with that lady who wanted to lose weight I have re-tuned myself to working in a different way, I now focus on building those relationships in my clients Neuro systems and conditioning them to ensure they are strong. The conditioning is then topped up or re-tuned on a regular basis until the goal or target is achieved.
