Cleansing or "detoxifying" is often cited as a good way to lose weight. The idea being that a certain amount of weight that builds up in the body is a result of undigested food in the intestines. Colon-cleansing is supposed to eliminate this weight which some believe to be as much as 10-20 pounds. First of all, doctors say that this undigested food is far less than that amount. But there are several other issues involved with this technique. Here's just a few... One would think that colon-cleansing procedures would be limited to clinics or hospitals, but people are actually doing colon cleansing at home (unsupervised!). This may not be a good idea. I know, colon cleansing is an age-old process, and people in general are not opposed to letting go of the stuff in their bowels. But here is a little known fact about "detoxifying" and "cleansing" - you can become dehydrated in the process. Just like with diuretics, unsupervised cleansing procedures that encourage increased bowel movement can actually place you in danger. Doctors state that these procedures can help reduce a little weight by speeding up the process of removing stools from your large intestines. But as for long-term weight loss and weight maintenance? These procedures are next to useless, because these procedures don't address the cause of weight gain, which is usually a person's daily eating habit. With increased bowel movement, you can also disturb the electrolyte balance in your body. You can suffer from irregular heartbeat, and so on. Electrolytes are that important, which is why I'm always wary of diets and weight loss techniques that require increased urination and bowel movement. Colon cleansing, when used properly, can help a doctor diagnose what's wrong with a person's GI tract - but that's really the end of it. The human body is not indifferent to toxins and waste products. The human body has been finely tuned over evolutionary time to process and remove waste. It knows what to do, and it doesn't need much to accomplish its cleansing functions. If you really want to lose the extra stool weight, don't go online and buy a colon cleansing pack. Instead, eat more fiber, and eat less processed food.
