Pivoting Hand Vac, PHV1810 Review And Compare

I owned the previous version (PHV1800) for a couple of years until we needed to replace it (not the vac's fault - my wife - long story). The 1800 was an excellent vac so it was logical for us to replace it with the 1810. The 1810 is compact and the suction is excellent. However it has two significant flaws over the older model;

1. It doesn't come with a wall mount charging cradle. The wall mount that came with 1800 was very convenient and the vac simply dropped into the mount. This one has a plug which means the vac sits on the pantry floor and needs to be plugged in and out between uses.

2. As another reviewer pointed out, unless you empty the vac after each use (or remember to hold the vac in a particular way), the debris falls out when you fold the nozzle open or shut. This is a seriously dumb design and I cannot tell you how irritating it is. The old model had a rubber flap built into the nozzle which prevented debris falling out.

Black & Decker - what were you thinking ? I have 3 cats and a dog and this vacuum is amazing at sucking up fur tumbleweeds, stray kitty litter, tracked in dirt, or whatever they most recently decided destroy. My regular vacuum tends to just kick stuff around, and miss stuff around the edges - this makes quick work of any mess. I love the fact that it's cordless, and I'm glad it doesn't have a cradle -- I can plug it in anywhere! A lot of people complained that dirt had a tendency to fall out - and I was worried about this when I ordered - but I haven't found that to be true at all - there is a little flap, and if the vacuum is flipped up, instead of down, the flap 'opens', but obviously if the nozzle is facing up, nothing is going to fall out. I was excited to find the little brush piece that's built into the nozzle, you can quickly flip it down as you're using it and it does a great job of helping remove pet fur from upholstery. Also, I was amazed to see out easy it is to empty! Push button to open door, dump, and close. Great product - I'll be recommending it to all my friends who have pets and kids!!!!

I got this vacuum a couple weeks ago... and I love it. I had the older version on my wish list and when I finally decided to get it, they had a newer model out that seemed to cost less... I went for it. It definitely looks very cool and it's extremely powerful! I can't say I use it for hours on end, but it stays charged for as long as I need a hand vac for (half hour?). It works extremely well (I have two cats).

I didn't realize, until it arrived, tho, that this version does not have a cradle. I really had dreams about hanging it in it's dock on the wall and thought about returning it, but it worked so well and folded up so compactly I decided it was not that big of a deal. Also, as someone else mentioned, it does have a little problem that if you don't empty it right away and fold it up, the stuff you just vacuumed up will fall out. This sounds pretty terrible, but my husband and I thought that it was probably best to just empty it every time anyways.
