The MS300 CAN OBD-II Scan Tool Review And Compare

Pros. It has a simple, backlit screen that's easy to read. Has CEL/SES clear function. Cheap.

Cons. It fails to scan my BMW 5 Series correctly. I've had three codes on my car in the past month and this device managed to only read two that were FIXED. Just recently I got a check engine light that came up as a P0440 code that I scanned at a local Autozone. My tool however doesn't doesn't detect it at all. What it does read are codes P1423 and P1421, two issues with my secondary air unit and check control valve that have been corrected long ago. It also failed to read my engine coolant temperature problem code of P0116 which caused me to fail my smog. All in all, it never to give me an accurate reading, let alone detect a problem at all 4 out of 4 times.

Im fine with the price and construction of this toy like device but it should at least WORK properly on my vehicle. Perhaps I purchased a faulty unit, perhaps it just doesn't function well with my vehicle. Either way, I'll not be purchasing an Autel product ever again. Automotive tools should be accurate and reliable, regardless of the price of the product. I used the MaxiScan to diagnose a check engine light on my son-in-law's 1996 Mustang. He had stored the car at my house for a couple of years while he and my daughter got settled in their new home. When we started the Mustang the check engine light was flashing.

Not wanting to drive the car until we knew what was wrong, I ordered the MaxiScan from Amazon (on sale for $19.99) and it was delivered in less than a week. It took longer to unpack the scan tool then it did to plug it in and read the resulting code (cylinder 2 misfire). When we had changed the spark plug the insulator had cracked. A quick change of the plug and the car was up and running and passed emissions testing.

Bottomline: Inexpensive and effective tool that saved my son-in-law a trip to the shop (and the $75/hour diagnostic fee).

Pros:
- Powered by car's electrical (Data Link Connector)
- Easy to use and straightforward interface
- User's Manual and code definitions provided with scan tool
- DVD with user manual and code definitions (can be loaded on a notebook--codes are searchable)
- Great deal compared with locally available options

Cons:
- Excessive plastic packaging (although it does protect the scan tool) I have an Odyssey with the dreaded check engine light, P0420 code. This scanner worked on the first try and is allowing me to try the workarounds found on the internet to get the light to go off. I will say that if you don't follow the exact sequence in the manual for connecting and starting the scan you will see the Link Error message. Just follow the instructions and it should work. Can't beat the price (vs. $150 for Goodyear and the dealer to read it) and it beats going to autozone every time I want to check it the codes and see if the sensors are ready.
