Best flashlite ever Streamlight 73001 Nano Light Review 2011

While this light is very compact and bright, it has a major design flaw. To turn the light on or off is done by twisting it until it turns off. Twisting it too far in the "off" direction means that all the batteries fall out into your pocket (if you're lucky). Also, it is very easy to turn "on" in your pocket by accident if you're trying to keep it in the small "sweet spot" between off and on.

In the few months I've used this, the batteries have emptied into my pocked and onto the floor three times. There have also been countless times when the light was accidentally turned on. The end result is dead batteries which are expensive to replace.

One more thing - it requires two hands to turn on. Often I've been stumbling through the dark and need to put items down in the dark in order to turn this on.

This would be a perfect device if it had a small, accessible, and firm button. I bought one of these about eight months ago and am back to buy two or three more after a valet broke the first one. My family and friends have come to rely on me having a small, powerful light source in my pocket, and I can't let them down now... winter solstice is almost here.

It's incredibly small, and that's the root cause of all of the imperfections about this tiny torch. It has no switch; the circuit is closed by screwing the barrel tight so that contact is made with the battery. But the forward end (Lens and LED assembly) is not captured, allowing curious valets and children to completely unscrew the barrel and sayonara Nano. If you leave the Nano unscrewed just a fraction of a turn so that it can be operated one-handed, then jostling in the pocket can cause the battery to drain. As an engineer, I suspect that there is still room for clever design that could solve both of these problems without driving the price up too much. Perhaps we'll see an improved version in the future.

In the meantime, I accept these imperfections happily in exchange for the amazing convenience, performance and unobtrusiventess of the Nano. Tininess is the chief feature of the Nano and it clearly drives all of tradeoffs that have been made. And brightness wasn't one of the tradeoffs - it's amazing how bright this little LED is for its size. It has many obvious uses, and a few not so obvious ones. I found myself flashing the Nano instead of flicking my lighter at the end of a concert, and I saw it reflecting from the stage... and I was in the mezzanine. There are other flashlights for other purposes, but this one fits its niche very well, even if it isn't perfect. And at the price, you can afford two or three. I'm going to order a half dozen right now.

And another tip: You can get replacement batteries for less than $0.25 each; just search Amazon for "LR41" -- you'll find scads.
