Tried to do pancakes and sausage in this black friday 2013

Since this is my first indoor grill, as soon as I got it, I started to think about ways to use it. I don't eat wheat, so bake everything with spelt flour; spelt flour reacts to yeast a little differently from wheat flour, basically you only let it rise once, then use it. I made a slightly wet, yeast-raised spelt focaccia dough into slightly less than grill-size pies filled with pear-cream-cheese filling, used the heavy plastic sheet I had rolled them out on to pick them up and lay them onto the hot grill, then grilled them with the grill closed, on medium-high for 20 minutes, having melted some margarine onto the grill before laying on the pie .. result was delectable! Fried and baked at the same time, pear-cream-cheese flavor infused throughout the dough, both moist and crispy. Last night I marinated boneless skinless chicken breast which then got grilled and was really yummmm. And you can just take a plain cheap-o supermarket sausage link, cut in half, split lengthwise, grill cut-side down so the fat goes down onto the grill, better than any other way I've found to cook those sausages yet! What a fun cooking toy, I'm enjoying this thing a whole lot! But I'm especially excited about the spelt-dough grilled pies! All kinds of fillings are going through my mind.BUYER BEWARE: This has received a lot of positive reviews, and I loved that it had all the features I wanted. Pros: easy cleanup with the removable plates you can use either on grill or griddle sides. Drip tray works very well, even in open position. Con: the really important part, the HEAT, does not work well in the open mode. I took a chance and bought it having seen that in some of the other reviews, but some reviewers said that preheating as instructed eliminated the problem. Not so for us! We loved it the first two times we used it, once as a closed contact grill and once as a closed Panini press. Tried to do pancakes and sausage--- took all @#$% night practically and had to keep closing the unit again to get it back up to a useable temp. The fat from the sausage actually got close to solid a few times, the unit got so dang 'cold' (plates still felt hot and you could've easily burned a finger, but it wasn't hot enough to cook the meat). Disappointed with the fact you can't really use it in the open position, so I may return it (recently purchased) and hope that the replacement unit will work better. If it doesn't, I guess my two choices are either to keep it for contact-grill only or return it altogether.
