goes out before a hot temp in this black friday 2013

I have found I like this a lot more than I thought I would. It works great for hamburgers, steaks, pork tenderloin, scallops, fish fillets, chicken breast and grilled sandwhiches. Very easy to clean up. Very easy to change the grill to griddle with the removeable plates. The biggest drawback is the the way the grease/fat drains. The opening needs to be bigger because it gets clooged up and the fat cannot flow off and the unit needs to be sloped for that to happen more efficiently. I prop the front of the unit up so the fat can drain better off the back. My unit appears to have a "hot spot" so that area gets done a little more quickly. Over all a great little addition to my kitchen. We bought the Griddler to replace a Foreman grill that was too small to cook burgers for my family of 4. I am pleased with the heating element, which takes about 10 minutes to achieve 'sear' temperature (recommended for burgers). The detachable plates are very easy to remove and clean. However, the plates are not deep enough to keep grease from dripping over the side of the Griddler and onto the counter top. The cooking surface is level, so the grease does not channel into the grease cup below the unit. I have to place the Griddler on a cookie sheet to keep my counters clean. Also, when you lift the lid to check the food, the grease that is on the top plate drips behind the unit onto the power cord (and counter top, again). To me, this is a major design flaw. I would not buy another Griddler if this is not remedied.The whole idea of a 5 in 1 appliance is very attractive for anyone with a small kitchen, and this is one so far works very well. Makes panini sandwiches, waffles (purchase the extra plates), pancakes, hamburgers - in fact anything that you would cook on a flat or ribbed surface. It's easy to take the square cooking "plates" out for cleaning, too. I am heeding the reviews of others who indicate that the non-stick coating on these plates chips rather easily. I don't scrub, I don't use metal utensils, and I definitely don't put it in the dishwasher.Had such great expectations for this product. Unfortunately It has performed poorly. The temperature regulator for the grill/Panini never has worked properly...and it goes out before a hot temp. is reached.
