I have had one for several years for this black friday 2013

I always read the more negative reviews before I purchase something. In this case, I feel that they are generally not warranted. This grill is much better than the 3 Forman ones I had in the past. Several were concerned about the plates not heating up quickly enough when using it as a griddle. If you follow the instructions and pre-heat with it closed and then open it up, it does just fine on eggs, pancakes, etc. Of course it will take a long time if they are exposed to the air. A second concern was about the thermostat causing the plates to cook sporadically...this is actually a great feature and keeps them from overheating as happens on ones without a thermostat. I had several George Forman Grills and this was a problem that led to the coating flaking off within a year. Finally, as for keeping the non-stick coating in great condition, here are the rules I follow based on the web and my own experience. 1) Cook on medium heat only...high heat quickly trashes the coating as noted by many manufacturers. 2) do not wash in the dishwasher despite it saying you can. The detergents and heat are just too much. 3) Do not use spray oils since they have things in them other than oil that build up and ruin the coating...I rub a little cooking oil on the plates before using. 4) do not leave cooked stuff on the plates...clean them immediately...first of all, it is much harder to get off and secondly, the oils, acids, etc damage the coating.: Finally, I think that all the units sold now have the metal clips to hold the plates on. The only reason I am giving this 3 stars is that I have had one for several years and it works great. I gave a daughter one for her birthday in September and just found out today that it hardly warms up. She tried for an hour to grill a couple of burgers and they never cooked. She could even put her fingers on the grill and it was barely warm. She also mentioned that the one I bought for my other daughter in December '12 barely gets warm. I told them that Cuisinart guarantees their products for 3 years. I'm sure they would have rated this product much lower. Sure hope they are able to return them!! For the most part, it works for its intended purpose. It cooks quickly and is really easy to clean the plates. We use it for burgers and other grilled sandwiches all the time. However, I find that the brackets holding the upper plate do not lock in the way they should, which is very annoying.
