So far so good! Comfortable and quiet Shaver

I have a very checkered history with electric shavers. I'm not a hairy guy, but I do have to shave every morning in order to avoid the stubble look. I love the convenience of not having to use shaving cream but almost all the electrics I've tried over the years have let me down in one way or another. Many don't cut very well and miss hairs entirely and some are deafening as well as ineffective, so I keep a bunch of disposable manual razors around to finish the job, particularly around the jaw and neck. I have a very angular chin and jaw area which causes problems for electrics.

In terms of design, shape, and functionality, this PT730 is very similar to the Philips Norelco 6940 that I own and use (and hate). Both units have a triple head and a beard/sideburns trimmer that flips out at the back. The PT730 sports a more sophisticated black and silver look and works much better. The 6940's "lift and cut" system was more of a "yank and hurt" system for me when I let my facial hair grow out for 3 or more days. The PF730, by contrast, gives a very smooth shave around my face. I did not feel any yanking at all using this on a day old face. My problem area (under jawline and around the throat) remains a problem area. This razor had trouble getting to all the stubble.

The build is very solid and sturdy feeling. I have no worries about tossing it inside my suitcase or gym bag and traveling with it, as I've done with my other Norelco. The shaver is acceptably quiet. I like the spring-loaded flip top. It allows easy cleaning with either a brush or rinsing under running water. I've been using this razor for 2 weeks now and it's performing admirably. I will grow out my facial hair over the weekend and update my review accordingly. I do not have a heavy beard by any standard, but when people say an electric razor can cut as close as a blade, I shake my head. I've noticed that almost all of those types of reviews are not written first person. The reviewer is reporting what her husband or son told her. If my wife took the trouble to give me an expensive razor and asked how I liked it, it would be great and thank you very much.

An electric razor has always been a backup for me, for those times for when I don't have the time for a good pre-soak of my beard hairs, few as they are. The Norelco PT730 replaced an older Braun which wasn't holding a charge any longer. I like tthe longer cord which makes shaving while charging easier. I also liked being able to simply flip up the razor head to rinse them clean. My Braun required a charging/cleaning stand and proprietary cleaning cartridges. Those expensive cartridges were never on sale at my local dollar store, maybe in Germany at the Deutsch mark store.

The Norleco is a mid-range razor in the Norelco line-up at a mid-range price. I don't think there is a lemon in the whole lot and the PT730 is no exception. The Norelco "floating head" design does seem to reduce skin irritation over the straight head design like on the Braun, at the cost of making one or two more passes over your beard.
