Otherwise it functions well. Directions are a bit vague, so everything we have dried has been an adventure. For instance, it took us about 2 1/2 days to dry grapes into raisins. Good raisins. But I can only imagine that by the time you add the power costs, boxed raisins would have been a lot cheaper.

The Nesco American Harvest FD-75PR 700-Watt Food Dehydrator is wonderful for making beef jerky. We use their Nesco homemade beef jerky spices, variety pack, and mix the flavors to our taste. Haven't tried ground beef jerky. We slice ours. And the directions for doing that are again a bit vague, but it's not difficult, and the results are fantastic.

Clean up isn't bad. If you can't fit the trays into the top rack of your dishwasher, washing by hand is a bit of a chore, and after a batch of jerky, requires a good soak in the sink. But overall, since we purchased it primarily for making jerky, we are pleased with this item.My kids have a restless reaction to foods that contain red dye 40. My wife and I limit their exposure when we can. An example is a particular fruit snack that did not contain this dye. Recently, they changed their ingredients and so we are left with no options on the snack isle. We figured we could entertain their cravings by making homemade fruit leathers. The ability to make jerky was a bonus for me. I ordered another brand that I thought was going to do the job, but once it arrived I found the construction to be subpar and it was passive, requiring rotation of the trays. I immediately sent it back to Amazon. Thats when I ordered this Nesco unit. It is powerful, and effective. I have used it a number of times and made some really good jerky and fruit leathers. I have tried a couple of the seasonings and absolutely love them. Order this and you can't go wrong.

I bought this item as a means to deal with the overabundance of produce coming out of my garden!!! I have dried tomatoes, apples, apricots, peppers, and made a ton of venison jerky using this machine. I also purchased the extra "layers" enabling me to be more efficient and do even more drying in the same amount of time. The tomatoes came out EXACTLY like the package of sun-dried tomatoes that you would buy in the store! They were such a hit (and I dried so many) that I even sold them to a local cafe. Everything I have dried has come out amazing. I bought the fruit leather screen and the jerky screen and both came out beautiful. There are two drawbacks to this dehydrator: 1) is that it is pretty noisy and 2) there is no "auto off" feature. The machine stays on as long as it is plugged in, so you do have to come back and check the food every hour or so to make sure everything's going okay. But all in all, it's a great product, I have yet to have a problem with it.
