Finally a decent toaster oven For Sale 2012

I bought a Black and Decker on Amazon about six months ago and hated it. Especially the wind-up spring timer which was impossible to set correctly or repeatably. I vowed to find a toaster oven that had some way to reliably toast bread without burning or undercooking. Over 75% of the toaster ovens used some sort of spring timer - BZZT OUT!

The 25% left mostly were bigger units with digital timers. This Cuisinart is one of the few without a digital or spring timer.

Also this Cuisinart doesn't have heat shields over its heating elements. I consider that a VERY good thing. The shields on the Black and Decker were looking groady after less than six-months use. WIth no shields if something falls onto a heating element it merely burns off instead of baking onto the shield.

The auto rack pull-out actually works here. With the Black and Decker it was not a feature as much as one more thing in the way of making toast.

The crumb tray covers the entire bottom of the unit with no chance of crumbs getting under the tray when it's in place. The Black and Decker tray allowed copious amount of crumbs to settle in the bottom of the unit.

Pay the extra money and get a decent toaster oven...Toaster ovens seem to be a class of appliance that gravitates toward the bottom. A trip to any big retailer will reveal shelves filled with tinny, $29 abominations that look like they'd be scary just to plug in. On the other end of the spectrum are digital-convection-broiler-toastermatics with triple digit price points.

The Cuisinart seems to occupy about the only real niche in the middle. It's big enough to be useful without being too huge for a countertop appliance, it's reasonably priced, and it seems to be a solid performer.

Toast is even and well done, bagels aren't incinerated, and the controls are easy to use. For those who say it doesn't have a timer, it does - at least a limited function one. It has a bagel/toast timer, and it actually seems to get it just right.

My sole disappointment and the reason for losing a star is that the cabinet gets hot. REALLY hot. One of my reasons for purchasing this was that it's been an average of 104F here for the last two weeks, and I was hoping that a smaller oven might heat the kitchen up less than using the range. However, the range is so much better insulated, I really think it puts out less heat. The Cuisinart is like a space heater. Still and all, it's going into the space being vacated by my piece-of-junk $11 K-Mart pop up toaster, and it's welcome nevertheless.
